Prizes for Members

The AEA offers Student Prizes, Conference Awards, and Professional Development Awards. All awards are merit-based.

The Professional Development Awards are assessed by an external panel and achievements are judged relative to opportunity. Voting members of the AEA Council are not eligible for these awards.

Prizes for Top Students in an Introductory Epidemiology or Biostatistics Course

Each year the AEA offers Top Student Prizes to students who achieve the highest mark in an Introductory Epidemiology or Biostatistics course. The prize is a one-year student membership to the AEA.

Students enrolled in either undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs within Schools of Public Health across Australia and New Zealand

Two students, per institution, per year 

1 year student membership of the AEA

Course coordinators will be contacted through CAPHIA (Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australia) and relevant New Zealand universities will be identified by NZ AEA branch representative at the end of Semester 2 each year to nominate the top two students.

The AEA Early Career Workshop Award

 The aim of this award is to provide up to three early career epidemiological researchers (masters or doctoral students, or those who have graduated with one of these degrees in the past 2 years) the opportunity to meet others at a similar stage in their training, and to discuss methodological, theoretical or other issues with experienced epidemiologists in a workshop style format. The conference workshop provides the awardees anopportunity to present a brief background outlining one or more methodological, theoretical or other problems they have encountered in their research. Each researcher will be matched with one or two epidemiologists with expertise in the area (the discussants) who will lead a discussion involving the presenting early career researcher and the audience.

All AEA student members.

All AEA members who completed a postgraduate research degree not more than 2 years before the closing date.

The AEA Student Conference Award

Awarded to student members of AEA who submit exemplary abstracts to the AEA Annual Scientific Meeting. Applications are invited at the time of the Call for Abstracts by indicating on the abstract that they wish to be considered for the student conference award. The amount of funding may vary from year to year.


All AEA student members.

The AEA Conference Travel Award for Indigenous Members

Awarded to Indigenous members who submit exemplary abstracts to the AEA Annual Scientific Meeting. Applications are invited at the time of the Call for Abstracts by indicating on the abstract that they wish to be considered. The award is merit-based and there is no stipulation on how the award is spent. Members who receive this award are not eligible for the general Conference Awards.

Other initiatives of the Council to improve diversity in the membership may be made in addition to or as a replacement to this award.

AEA members of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island, Māori or Pasifika background.

Usually 1 for an Australian member and 1 for a NZ/other member

The AEA Early Career Researcher Professional Development Award

This is a $2000 award to support a postgraduate student member of the Association who is nearing completion of study, or a member of AEA who has recently completed postgraduate studies, to to undertake professional development activities.

All AEA members who completed a postgraduate research degree not more than 2 years before the closing date.

The AEA Mid-Career Researcher Professional Development Award

This is a $2000 award to support a mid-career member of the Association to undertake professional development activities.

AEA MCR PD award 2024

All AEA members who completed a PhD more than 2 but less than 12 years before the closing date. Justification for career interruptions required for those applying more than 12 years post-doc.
